Open Letter to the National Archives of Japan
Regarding the Special Internet Exhibit
“Diplomatic Negotiation between Japan and the United States”

January 22, 2020

On December 8, 2005, the National Archives of Japan opened an Internet Special Exhibit “Archives Reveal Diplomatic Negotiation between Japan and the United States”. Reference materials and source materials for this exhibit were added and updated after 2005, up to and including 2007.
However, we did not find Study on Japan’s Diplomacy after the Opening of the War between Japan and the United States, authored by Professor Sugihara Seishiro, published in 1997 by Aki Shobo, among the many references.
As Prof. Sugihara states in his attached letter, this book brings up many crucial issues. Moreover, the book has been translated into English , Chinese and Korean. This is in fact, rare in the case of academic books written in Japan.
In light of this, Prof. Sugihara sent a letter to Mr. Kato Takeo, Director of the National Archives of Japan, asking why his book was not listed as a reference and demanded a fair hearing for the inclusion of references relevant to the National Archives’ exhibit.
