The Lunacy of Anti-Japanese Racism:
Unmasking “Japan’s Holocaust”

Preface
Historian Brian Mark Rigg sees a “holocaust” in which Japan killed 30 million people,
more than that of the Nazi Holocaust in which 11.7 million people including Jews were
killed. Rigg seems to aspire to write a comprehensive history of Japan’s “holocaust”, like
historians Raul Hilberg and Martin Gilbert who wrote about Hitler’s Holocaust.
However, Rigg’s book plainly shows us that if we try to write history with the thinking
that something that did not happen actually happened, nothing but fantasies will emerge.
This fantasy world is also steeped in sheer anti-Japanese racism. Nonetheless, it is a
fantasy world that some people wholeheartedly believe in, which leads them to make
ridiculous statements about Japan. Rigg’s book is unbearable to those who have a firm
grip on reality and to even those with a strong stomach.
Who is Brian Mark Rigg? It is important to know his qualifications. He holds an
undergraduate degree from Yale University and a PhD from the University of Cambridge.
He served as an officer in the US Marine Corps and “volunteered” in the Israeli Defense
Force. He collected a vast amount of materials on part-Jews who were members of the
Nazi Party and served in the German military. His book, Hitler’s Jewish Soldiers, won the
William E. Colby Award for military writing. He taught history at a military college in
the United States, Southern Methodist University, and the United States Military
Academy at West Point. Wikipedia calls Rigg a writer, military historian, and speaker.
As you can see, he has a Ph.D. from a prestigious university and taught at West Point, so
I can’t immediately dismiss him as a crank. If his premise of a Japanese “holocaust” is
accepted in such a way, it would have a serious impact on Japan. absolutely necessary to
counter his attack, right at the water’s edge.
Through his book, Rigg reveals himself to be a childish racist, quite unaware of this
himself. For example, in Chapter 8, “The Rape of Guam,” he writes:
“The Japanese authorities also imposed their language and customs upon the local
population, forcing school children to participate in rigorous Japanese language and
cultural education.”

Just after this, he writes that the Chamorros speak fluent English. The Chamorros are
fluent because Americans forced them to learn English. To Rigg’s thinking, it’s alright to
force people to learn English but forcing people to learn Japanese is evil. What he
demonstrates without saying anything is that he hates Japan and the Japanese.
In my book, I will show that although Rigg demonstrates childish bigoted tendencies, his
racism is in fact deeply-rooted, and he writes Japan’s Holocaust on the basis of his deeply
rooted racism. The book has pretensions extensive documentation, it has 1,564 notes.
Much if not all, however, are fantasies or factually wrong. Using any old, un-vetted
document is extremely dangerous. Let me give you an example:
“According to some research, only 10 % of the estimated 200,000 “Comfort Women”
survived their harrowing ordeals. Many perished due to internal bleeding, within
combat zones, or as a result of diseases, while others were ruthlessly murdered by
their perpetrators once they were deemed no longer useful.”

This outright falsehood was written on the basis of the repeatedly debunked “literature”.
It is now a well-known fact that there has not been a single case of comfort women being
forcibly recruited. Furthermore, as stated in Harvard University professor James Mark
Ramseyer’s book, Completely Debunking the Comfort Women Sexual Slavery Theory
(Heart Publishing, Tokyo, 2023), comfort women legally engaged in prostitution, signed
consensual contracts with vendors and were given a large advance before the start of their
contracts. The military provided the comfort women lodging, conducted hygiene
inspections, and protected the comfort women as they were within the military’s area of
operations. And just because comfort women were no longer useful, it was not possible
to simply “kill them in cold blood.” If one did that, one would inevitably be sentenced to
death by court-martial. Japan and the Japanese military were not lawless very unlike
Rigg’s fantasy world.
In fact, there is a book called I Was a ‘Comfort Woman’ of the Burma Front Shield
Division (Nashinoki-sha, Tokyo, 2015), which interviewed Moon Ok-chu, a Korean
comfort woman. In this book, she says that she was almost killed with a military sword
by a heavily drunken private first class, but she managed to escape and killed him. She
was court-martialed, but she was acquitted on the grounds of self-defense. She was
acquitted despite being a Korean and a comfort woman. This shows that the Japanese
military adhered to the law. Rigg states that Japan was not a lawful country. Rigg’s book
is a big lie, based on a bigger lie of the “literature”.
Basically, if you read Rigg’s book, you see various “quotes” based on the premise that
Japan is a lawless, yakuza state.
We cannot leave a racist book like this alone that insults the Japanese people and the
Japanese nation.
And that’s not all. He rationalizes the atomic bombing of Japan based on a false premise.
He say Japan should be grateful:
“Luckily for the Japanese citizenry, it took only two atomic bombs to do the trick. ”

The Japan Association of Atomic and Hydrogen Bomb Victims’ Organizations (Japan
Hidankyo) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2024. This award shows that the atomic
bombing of Japan is a travesty that should not be tolerated and this has become
conventional wisdom.
By contrast, Rigg praises the atomic bombing of Japan and his book is a testament that
shows that not only is he an enemy of Japan but also of humanity. Rigg’s book is an
unforgivably black book.
