(70th Conference Series 4)
The Greater East Asia Conference which I remember
Watanabe Shoichi, Emeritus Professor at Sophia University

November 6, 2014

On 6th of November, 2013 we held a conference memorizing the 70th Anniversary of Greater East Asia Conference, held on 5th and 6th of November, 1943. Since then, we have introduced the following addresses given at the conference in our Newsletter No. 62, 63 and 64.
Mr. Surya Bose(grand children of brother of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose)
Mr. Kase Hideaki: The Greater East Asia Conference Paved the Way to Universal Human Equality
Mr. Henry Stokes: Japan was the Light of Hope in Asia
Now we present Professor Watanabe’s address.
He still remembers a song taught before the start of the war with a phrase “We are going to crush their 100-year ambition to invade and control East Asia.” So, liberation of the Asian nations was a common thought among the people at that time, he says. He also remembers all seven member’s name who attended the conference representing Asian nations. They were not a puppet of Japan but independent minded with a determination to become a really independent country from Western colonization.
